"Claude Vivier's Paramirabo is a special piece for me. It is one of the first pieces of new music that I worked on extensively, beginning in my undergraduate degree at McGill University. At that time, I was playing chamber music with students at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montreal. I would go for weekly coaching sessions and rehearsals where we spent many days refining details and learning various approaches to this piece.
The piece starts with the violin, cello, and flute in rhythmic unison. While the piano is often interrupting the other instruments, the end of the piece brings all the instruments together in concert. Certain elements throughout sound like a children’s song, while other passages provide whistling parts for some of the players, bringing lightness to various moments. This is a fantastic piece that taught me much about music, working with others, and performing."
